Activities - Bird Watching |
The area within which the Driekoppen is situated, is a bird watcher’s paradise. We reintroduced wetland areas, ideal for birdlife to flourish in. A very wide variety of bird life can be found here, ranging from the majestic White Cross Eagle to the Cardinal. Because of the close proximity to Memel, a bird watcher’s haven and an area that specialises in endemic bird species of high-altitude grasslands and wetlands
We also recently observed a pair of Fish Eagles, breeding pairs of Blue Crane, (Breëkop) Martial Eagle and Dwarf Eagle. We also observed the return of Vultures to the area, as carcasses are left outdoors in the field for them to feed on.
The area surrounding Memel is host to a number of "specials", as well as a number of Red Data Book species, including Rudd's & Botha's Lark, Yellow-breasted Pipit, Blue Korhaan, Ground Woodpecker, Buff-streaked Chat, Sentinel Rock Thrush and Bush Blackcap. Wattled, Grey Crowned and Blue Crane also occur and breed in the area.
A network of gravel provincial and farm roads provide access to various habitats in which these birds are to be found. A number of birding routes have been identified and information on which birds may be found in the different areas is available. A checklist of birds to be seen in the district, as well as a list of the "specials" is also available.
