At Driekoppen we do not feed the fish! Our trout only eat what nature provides. So, there are no “canned” trout here.

Currently trout fishing is offered to the guest in well stocked, still water trout dams which were constructed within the confines of the narrow gorge.

The Freestate, and in particular the Eastern Freestate is considered as one of the gems when it comes to trout fishing in South Africa. The still water dams, surrounded by abundant natural beauty and sheer sandstone rock faces of the Witkoppen, indigenous trees, and free roaming game, form the ideal backdrop for trout fishing at its very best. While construction of the dams took place, great emphasis was placed on making the dams appear as aesthetically pleasing and fittingly natural in the beautiful surroundings they are situated in. Our investigation into the area concluded that there are no other establishments that offer the same variety of fishing dams as us.

The feeding and breeding needs of the trout species also occupied an extremely high post. A habitat hosting for various other creatures, such as frogs, tadpoles, insects and their larvae, on which the trout prey, had to be kept in mind. The water with which the dams are filled with, has its origin from numerous strong flowing fountains higher up in the area. The water of these fountains that collect in the little stream that run through the narrow gorge, is cold and well oxygenated, making it perfect for trout.

The trout species on offer, namely brown and rainbow trout are kept in as natural surroundings as possible and are not fed any artificial feeds, but instead have to rely on nature for their staple in the form of insects, nymphs, larvae and smaller frogs endemic to the area. It is advised that the fly fisherman observe the insects and other species in the area to make an accurate choice when choosing a fly.

Because the diet on which the trout at Driekoppen feed is supplied only by nature, trout fishermen fishing here, will soon to their delight, realise that the fish put up an impressive struggle, greatly enhancing the fishing experience!
